The bombing of Hiroshima was an event that left both the emotional shadows of tragedy and also permanent physical shadows on the devastated landscape. These shadows were created by the great force of a nuclear weapon. When the heat of the atom bomb hit a person that was standing close to a wall, the person's body 'protected' the wall. The enormous heat of the bomb made it to the wall, the curb, building etc. and changed its colour. The body stopped some of the heat and it created what appears to be a shadow.

In the series Astray compiled of 6 photographic images, Thorp reflects upon a psychological conflict or mental illness that can effect us in a physical way. Similarly to the way that the atom bomb leaves behind a shadow on a wall, an illness can leave a shell of a being left behind after an inner conflict of an individual’s psyche.
